Atlanta the cultural hub

Very few cities in the world can match the checkered history of Atlanta or its natural beauty. In spring, the city is at its prettiest best with blossoms of Bradford pear, white dogwood and pink azaleas. In autumn too, it is quite attractive as can be seen by the ever-increasing number of tourists visiting. Spring and autumn are indeed the bets times to visit Atlanta. In summer, the weather turns humid putting the city and its inhabitants in a languid mood. People hate to step out of the air-conditioned comforts of their rooms.

Whether it is spring, summer or autumn, this vibrant city that is Atlanta, continues marching on through the pages of history. It is often referred to as a ‘crossroads town’ as it is most favoured as a hub for railroads, highways, airlines for transportation to the Southern United States, because of its unique geographical position and features. It is located in the northern half of the state of Georgia; the area is known as Piedmont. The area is mostly undulating hills, rugged peaks and flat coastal plains.

Right since 1837 it has been considered as a transportation nucleus for trade. Its growth in this direction continued over the years despite a couple of setbacks, like the civil war of 1860s. In 1864, General William Sherman burned all of the railroad facilities and almost every business and more than two thirds of the city’s homes, in an attempt to cripple transportation disrupt its supply lines. But the never-say-die spirit of Atlanta saw it virtually rising from its ashes like the Phoenix, in just a few years.

Within four years of Sherman’s attack, the Georgia capital was moved from nearby Milledgeville, where it had been seated since 1804, to Atlanta, and the city launched its first campaign to attract new business.

Atlanta is also well-known as the birthplace of the global soft-drink brand Coca Cola.
Back in 1886, a local pharmacy was selling a headache and hangover remedy, by the name of Coca Cola. In 1891, entrepreneur Asa Candler acquired the rights to this beverage by paying US$2300. The following year he founded the Coca-Cola Company.
The rest as they say is marketing history.

There are many other notable events for which the city will always remain the world map. It was the birthplace of the of anti-segregationist leader the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr. More recently, in 1996, this city played host to the Olympics.

The city covers an area of 352 sq. km. (136 sq. miles) and has 416,000 residents. Metropolitan Atlanta covers a wider area encompassing 20 counties and approximately 100 cities and towns. More than 3 million people live and work in the area.
