Austria
- A visit to paradise
The
most common picture of Austria is that of snow-topped peaks,
ski resorts, crystal-clear lakes, lush green valleys, Baroque
churches, the beer gardens and taverns. The picture is accurate
but not close enough, because look closer and you will find
many more remarkable and enchanting things about Austria. Among
other things, the gourmet culture of the Austrian people, their
legendary ‘Gemütlichkeit’ a relaxed enjoyment
of life – is in evidence in the cafés, where the
art of coffee-drinking has been raised to a high art. And don’t
forget the many Heurigen, where the latest vintages are accompanied
by vast quantities of food. Nightlife is varied offering something
for everyone. There are laid-back taverns, beer gardens and
excellent après-ski, as well as trendy clubs and dance
venues which are packed to the small hours. The best time to
visit Austria is between May and November.
As
you travel around the countryside you will come across many
remnants of Austria’s glorious past. These never fail
to fascinate the traveller and echo the reign of the once-powerful
Hapsburg dynasty that ruled over central Europe for seven centuries.
And nowhere is this legacy more evident than in the capital,
Vienna. Its ornate Opera House and the former Imperial residence
of the Hapsburg take the visitor down a red-carpeted memory
lane.
But
Vienna isn’t the only city with an
enchanting history. Salzburg is equally imbued with historical
magic with Baroque churches set against a backdrop of snow-capped
peaks. It is also famous as the birthplace of Mozart. Then there’s
also Innsbruck - another beautiful city that is right in the
centre of the Austrian Alps.
History apart, Austria is today known more for its leadership
in engineering, invention and design. Its striking architecture
gives it the image of a country that is fast advancing towards
new frontiers in all fields of knowledge. Its modern efficient
social system ensures a high quality of living for most of its
people. It has also earned its place in the field of music, literature
and the arts.
